Bicycles are wonderful inventions that we have all around us. As we all know, bicycles are mainly used for transportation, recreation, and sport. Bicycles have an invaluable part in the world, for moving people and goods to different areas, especially in places with few automobiles. For different types of purposes, there are different bicycle choices. Mountain bikes, road bicycles, hybrid bicycles, folding bicycles, and touring bikes are the most common ones. As climate-related awareness and concerns and arise, especially in the last decade, the popularity of cycling is increasing exponentially.

Bicycling is among the most accessible sports in the world. It is quite inexpensive as it doesn’t require fuel as motor vehicles and doesn’t require maintenance like automobiles, which makes cycling a great option for your economic concerns. Next, bicycles are perfect for short-distance transportation. It has countless benefits for our health. Cycling sport is relatively easy, compared with other types of sports. Bicycling for 30 minutes every day helps reduce body fat, increase muscle strength and flexibility, improve posture and coordination, decrease stress levels, and provides many more health benefits. It causes less damage in case of an injury. According to the reports, cycling reduces cardiovascular diseases, raising your heart rates and overall fitness condition. Furthermore, bicycling is an awesome choice for the environment. It simply doesn’t emit CO2 into the atmosphere and therefore you can reduce your carbon footprint. Remarked by the University of Oxford that, choosing a bike over a car only once a day would reduce an average person’s carbon emissions by 67%. Much less pollution is made, and also less noise too. To put it in other words, it is a legitimate climate solution. It is also expressed that a moderate increase in bicycling could save up to 6 to 14 million tons of CO2. Other than all these, bicycles can help you explore the world. Another important fact I wanted to add is that the Netherlands is the country with the most bicycles per capita of any country in the world, which is the country with its reputation for cycling-friendliness. According to the authorities, a huge portion of 90% of its 16.8 million population; is regular cyclists.

The number of people that are using bicycles in the U.S. has been recorded as 51.4 million, all of the people who took part in bicycling at least once a year. It is the nice truth that, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic in the last years, there appeared a substantial increase in bicycle sales. People chose cycling over public transport for hygiene-related reasons and cycling achieved its ultimate level of popularity in the last few decades. According to the Global Bicycle Market Outlook, the global market attained a value of USD 56.99 billion in 2022. Besides, the expectation is that the market will be growing at a CAGR of 6.5% in the 2023-2028 forecast period.

Now, let’s dive a bit into the bicycle’s history. Bicycles have their origins way before our time. According to the records, the first bicycle was invented in Germany. Charles, Baron Von Drais made a device of his own in 1817. It was a simple vehicle, which you were able to turn in different directions, having a wheel in the front. An attached padding was added by him, where he could put his weight, and upgraded the device with a part for his arms to rest. the bicycle was recognized as a “Draisienne” at the time, the time when patented in 1818; In regards to The National Museum of American History, According to the MIT Press, The National Museum of American History, and some other reputable sources. Drais invented the first bicycle in the world, intending to get around easier while working in the Royal Gardens, and came up with the idea. Pedals were introduced to his invention after the year of 1863. Before that time, the vehicle was called a “velocipede”. The pedals’ incorporation was in a company in France. An interesting fact is that the true pedal pioneer is still not clear.

Even after few centuries after the motor vehicles’ invention, bicycles always managed to keep their unique place in vehicles. As mentioned before, bicycles have been around for a long time and it seems to be supporting us for a long time on. We have to wait and see what’s next for the world of bicycles and cycling.
